Cardassian Gul Dukat, possessed by a Pah-wraith, manages to infiltrate the base and destroy the Tear of Contemplation, at the same time seriously injuring Commander Jadzia Dax.

• The structure of the story recalls that used within the series known as The Captain's Table.
• It is a partial rewriting of the episode The Tears of the Prophets, and it is included within the collection titled What If: A Star Trek Series.
• The sub-collection referred to is that of The Dominion War.
• The Captain narrating the events is Eva Ferrari, an original character of my own creation, whose first assignment as Commanding Officer is the U.S.S. Excalibur (NCC-82603), a Vesta-class starship.
• Captain Ferrari mentions the Qu'Vat Massacre, a story from her past in which a Federation starship and five Klingon birds-of-prey were destroyed in an attempt to protect a Klingon outpost from a vicious Dominion attack.
